The art of Giuseppe Chiari (Florence
1926-2007) embraces a range of
musical, visual and metalinguistic
experimentation which constitutes
one of the most fascinating and
complex artistic profiles of the second
half of the 20th century, and not
just in Italian terms. The meeting
with John Cage, the collaborations
with musicians like Pietro Grossi
and Sylvan Bussotti, the experience
of Visual Poetry and the adhesion
to the aesthetic premises of Fluxus
partly define the horizon of Chiari’s
operational and conceptual practice.
From the start the artist established
a network of international relations
across the various disciplines,
exploring the least conventional
territories (in 1962 his Gesti sul
piano Gestures on the piano were
performed at the first Fluxus internationale
Festspiele neuester Musik
in Wiesbaden), and participating in
major international shows (Documenta
5 in 1972, Venice Biennale in
1972, 1976 e 1978, Sidney Biennale,
1990).
The starting point for Chiari is
rooted in musical research, from
which he derives that fluidity which
enables him to combine a virtuoso
of scientific knowledge with a
mocking criticism of the rules, to
demolish the canons and recombine
the execution, the instruments
and the forms. In each of Chiari’s
gestures there is a disenchanted,
fierce political tension based on his
understanding of the role of art and
his capacity for critical revision. The
same fetishist but iconoclastic vigour
characterises his interventions
on objects, music scores and instruments,
and the same inspiration underlies
his Pianoforte scultura (Pianoforte
sculpture) and the memorable
declaration that “Art is easy”
